10:30 AM –  Studio visit with Kim Bishop and Luis Valderas

Kim Bishop:
I tell the stories of my past, present and future through subconscious imagery and process-oriented techniques. Growing up in Austin, Texas at a time of civil transition, my semi-autobiographical stories examine themes of displacement and survival mechanisms.
Luis Valderas:
My images explore possibilities of decolonization by isolating and rearranging iconic components of realities. Growing up on la fontera and listening to my mother and father’s stories of experiences in el norte revealed spaces of shared experiences. By retelling my family’s story while at the same time representing them as collective cultural icons intermingled with current events I connect the collective experience of past and present generations to collapse borders, examine transition/transformation and explore social and cultural ambiguities that exist in that shared space in between.
11:15 AM – John Mattson at REM Gallery

This work, as all my work, is the result of all that has preceded it. My vision is only that which I feel – a nebulous hum that would have no real meaning if I did not attempt to make it visual.  I strive to do this with iconography that has slowly evolved as I mature. I see most of my work as one frame, one snapshot, in a life of personal observation and inner search. It is a lifelong process of finding my own voice.
