7:30 PM – Meredith Dean and Dennis Olsen at their home studio

Meredith Dean:

My work is concerned with the constant nature of change, choice, and a fascination with the macro/micro and ever-shifting atmosphere of our physical world.  The process of relief printing is both a metaphor and ameans to communicate this idea.  My works are created from variouslayers of puzzle-cut relief plates, each containing a different aspect of mapping information about a specific place, on a given date and time of some personal importance.

Dennis Olsen:

Dennis Olsen’s portraits are derived from engravings on currency from around the world.

Like musical samplings after which they are titled, the images are a complex mix of drawing and frottage that melds ethnicity, gender, and class.

Accompanying each image is a short narrative written by the artist in response to the personalities that emerged in the drawing process. The entire body of fictive portraits depicts the residents of an imaginary village that is not located in a specific time or place but contains characters from many eras and locations. As the portraits emerged through the intuitive process the artist allowed distinct personalities to form quite unhindered, thereby exploring a wide variety of subjects and themes. Here you will find kings, queens, tyrants, heroes, saints and sinners: humor and silliness, vulnerability, pomposity, anger and tenderness.
